Construction Report: Pediatric expansion gains height, momentum

What started as an excavation in 2018 is now doing what Children’s of Mississippi patients do: It’s growing up.

The $180 million pediatric expansion at the University of  Mississippi Medical Center is rising from what once was the parking lot of Batson Children’s Hospital.

This summer, the tower will move from its structural phase to interior finishing, said Patrick Casey, executive director of the UMMC Office of Planning, Design and Construction. A celebration is in the works for June 27.

“This project is on time and at budget,” Casey said. “We are so proud of the progress being made, and we know it will make a difference for Mississippi’s children.”

Concrete pours are continuing this spring on the building’s structure, and excavation for a new parking garage is ongoing.

Paths inside the hospital’s ground floor were rerouted in January and temporary walls were installed to keep construction noise muffled as the new building is being connected to the Children’s Hospital lobby.

The hospital’s public entrance is now at the Winfred L. Wiser Hospital for Women and Infants, and free valet parking is available for outpatient visits.
